Tell you the truth, I bet most American don't know what's the 3rd largest city in the US.
BTW, Houston is actually the 5th largest city in the US (metropolitan area) behind Dallas-Ft. Worth.

Here's how useless the list that shows Houston as "#3 largest city in the US"
List of United States cities by population - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

- San Antonio is #7 followed by San Diego #8 and Dallas #9
- Austin is #13 followed by San Francisco #14
- El Paso is #19 followed by Boston #20, Seattle #21, Denver #22, Baltimore #23 and Washington D.C. #24
- St. Louis, MO is #58 two spots above Corpus Christi #60
- Orlando, FL is #78 two spots above Laredo #80

Wake me when Houston comes close to passing Chicago at the MSA or Urban level. The real size of a city. Not some arbitrary imaginary city limits. Thank you.

Yes, I'm not really sure why we go with city size instead of metro size. The metro is still part of the city's area. You make a very important point, the biggest cities aren't the best cities. However, I do think Houston's #4/5 rank does somewhat put it on the map. If it was #11, it would be completely overlooked. It's pretty impressive that Houston's livable qualities (jobs, cost of living) have propelled it to a high rank. Top 5 is nothing to sneeze at.

I agree metro area should mean more. However, this is city-data you know.

I vote to rename it MSA-data. Haha.

That explains why San Antonio (#7) gets more respect than San Diego, Dallas, San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, Denver, Kansas City, Atlanta, etc, etc. (Sarcasm)

The last time I checked, the Houston city limits aren't imaginary... When speaking of city size, by definition that means the city itself. If the thread was talking about metropolitan size, the word 'city' would have been replaced with 'metropolitan area'.

last time I checked, city limits ARE imaginary. Anybody can throw city limits out there and say this is our city. Nobody in their right mind believes Austin is bigger or as big as San Francisco. Or San Antonio is as big as Philadelphia.
