Do you get a better deal dealing directly with the apartment leasing office or if you go to one of those apartment finder services?

Usually no difference. The rents are what they are--and that's a function of supply and demand. Right now demand is pretty high so rents have been rising. Apartment complexes that are offering "deals" put those deals out into the marketplace (for the apartment locators as well as the prospective tenants) in a variety of ways.

Here's the site they use here in Houston. (Notice it has a "locator" log in feature.)

HOUSTON APARTMENTS - DALLAS APARTMENTS - SAN ANTONIO APARTMENTS - AUSTIN APARTMENTS - TEXAS APARTMENT SEARCH - APARTMENT SEARCH TEXAS - TEXAS APARTMENTS

There is rarely anyone at the complex itself that can negotiate the rent.

The locators help you find and narrow down the apartment complex you want to move into, and can help with the paperwork. But if you know where you want to go, that is no help. I know there are a few locators that will help you with moving or give a cash rebate, so that could be a benefit if you don't have moving help.
