Turns out my company has about ten facilities in Houston, and I can work at any of them as long as there is an opening. Although I have accepted a position in 77034, I am always thinking about other locations and wonder if I have made the right choice. They also have an opening in 77032 which I can still take. I saw a lot of townhouses and patio houses in that area. This one really caught my eye -- a crappy property on a big lot surrounded by trees. There is something rugged and romantic about this place. And the price is low. Would you buy something like this?

Houston home value, Houston home prices, and Houston property tax information

No. I would only buy this property if I planned to knock it down and build a house. It looks like a nice lot. Is it in a safe area?

I went to Moderator cut: link removed and it seems to be a diverse neighborhood which can be good. It is also very near Greens Road and Bush Airport so .... that area does have its issues with crime - Greenspoint Mall is not a safe mall. That area would also get A LOT of jet noise being so close to the international airport.

I would vote no.

1. The structure is an old trailer. It is not what I would describe as a sound, solid structure. You are basically buying the land. it could cost more to repair (the trailer) than it is worth. You would not recover your investment in repairs.

2. Location. Too far out to appeal to people wanting funky close in neighborhoods, too urban for people wanting a rural or suburban atmosphere. All the disadvantages of a country place and all of the disadvantages of the city and none of the advantages of either.

I don't hate Houston. I just hate the property taxes there. I don't think my stay is going to be permanent. I can see why most people wouldn't want to live in that trailer. After all, we are talking about Houston where there are so many better choices available. I guess I am one of those people who think a car is just something to get you from point a to point b and a house is just a roof over your head.

Grant it, the lot is pretty but I wouldn't live in a mobile home anywhere in Texas. With our violent weather, they are so NOT safe. I do like your attitude though about cars and houses.

David, I am just like you! I am very frugal when it comes to houses and cars and I am all about owning things free and clear. It would not bother me to live in a trailer like that, for a while, unless it is in a dangerous area. If you could take the money that otherwise would be wasted in rent and invest it wisely, you could be buying a better house free and clear in a few years.
