That's one thing we're considering. Unfortunately, both my wife and I are in the Coast Guard, so evacuations might be difficult. Hopefully they'll let one of us go if the time comes.

Coasties? great, know quite a few in the Galv. and Houston stations. Most are pretty nice folks and absolutely a miracle when it comes to emergency situations. If wife is going to be at Houston station then you might want to consider Crosby (this would requires tolls for you) or somewhere off 146 in Chambers Co. The Lomax area would be a considerably shorter drive however.

Alvin could be doable using Highway 6 to 288 to Loop 610 for getting to the port, and your best bet for Ellington Field would probably be Highway 35 north to Dixie Farm Road. You could also look around Manvel and try to get closer to 288, although that would make it a little longer for Ellington.

Santa Fe has good access to I-45 using FM 1764 or FM 646, but the latter road in particular has become congested with development around 45. Also, that's a pretty good haul down 45 to the East Loop/Clinton Dr. and the port.

Everything south of Houston is basically in a potential hurricane evacuation zone, as well as parts of Houston (mainly the East End along the bayous, although it's not good to be near any bayou that empties into a major body of water that would take in storm surge). North of Houston has become very built up. Your commute from the north will be worse than from the south, going to the Port or Ellington. Open space isn't as plentiful in Houston's outlying reaches as it was 30-40 years ago.
