I was hoping to get some information on where to live in Houston Metro area. Admittedly, I've spent exactly 20 hours in Houston so I know almost nothing other than what I've read online. In January I'll be making the move from Northern Virginia / DC Metro area to Houston. I'll be living and working in downtown for the first 6 months and then my family will be moving down in June/July 2013. This will be give me some time to find an area/place to permanently live.

Some things I'm looking for:

A. Good schools are really important.
B. I don't mind commuting say 45 minutes each way.
C. My range for housing is between 500-700k.
D. I'm open to building a house.
E. Safe area.

While I don't know much about the area we figure if we find a good neighborhood - everything else will fall into place. As a point of reference I live about 32 miles outside DC and love it. Great area, awesome schools, and tons of activities. I'm not opposed to living in the Houston, if it would fit in my price range. Not sure.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Sugar Land or Cinco Ranch. Good schools. Both are nice and geared towards families. Your first few months will allow you to see what area suits you best.

Your housing budget will go a lot further here than it does in NOVA. You can find neighborhoods in the suburbs with fantastic public schools, 30 minute commute, and a beautiful home under $350K.

I'm not too familiar with places like Memorial, but I think with your budget you may be able to find something there too, which is even closer to downtown.

Are you looking for urban or suburban housing?

Agree, do a forum search on 77079, loads of info. 77024 will be more of a stretch on your budget. Check har.com map search for listings in the various areas. I don't commute downtown but it must be at least 45 minutes from 77079, an hour from the burbs.
