The Houston region's unemployment rate jumped in January to 8.8 percent, according to Texas Workforce Commission data.
The Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area had a higher unemployment rate than the state average of 8.3 percent that month. Houston's unemployment rate was 8.3 percent in December 2010.

Houston area's job growth beats earlier estimates | Business | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

Smith speculated that stems from a surge of job seekers who are moving in from out of state. "Don't expect the unemployment rate to go down too fast," he said. "We're attracting labor almost as fast as we're hiring labor."
Like the article states above, our jobs are still growing, but the jobless are moving here in greater numbers.

Interesting that you say that which is very true. I see a lot of out of state resumes on my desk. Locals always take priority unless I can't find that skill set locally which is very rare. A lot of diversity and talented folks in Houston.

It's going to get ugly once the teachers layoffs happen. I am grateful every day that I am in independent in an area that is mandated by law.

I've stopped paying attention to the percentage rates. It's greatly manipulated; if the government didn't consider a few million people to 'no longer be in the workforce' (probably because they just gave up after not being able to find a job), the unemployment 'rate' would be closer to 12% nationwide.

I just look at private sector jobs created to get an idea as to how a region/country is doing overall.

Actually, 2010 was a decent year for the Houston-area economy.
Houston-area employers added 46,300 jobs from December 2009 to December 2010 - a 1.8 percent increase. However the number of people moving here are making the unemployment figures stay up.
