My wife and I could be moving to Houston next year. We'll be looking for somewhere to live where we could keep our two horses with us. She'll be working near the Port of Houston, and I'll be at Ellington Field. We'd like to find somewhere within an hour of those places if possible. I've been primarily looking south, around Alvin and Santa Fe. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Brian

Both of those areas are good if that's what you want. I'd think Alvin would be a worse commute -- lack of closeby freeways.

You might also try the Lomax area of LaPorte off North L street. The houses in that area have acreage and there is a nice city arena (covered) that folks can use.

Welcome to the Horse City. Southeast Texas is the only region in the country where I have seen horses wander free in an urban area. I was in Beaumont the other day where I saw a horse eating grass, unattended, across the street from a Subway. No lie.

Yeah, there were people riding horses around where I grew up (W. Bellfort & Eldridge area). I also saw a dude riding a horse on Cullen just south of 610. However ask around... most people in the Houston area don't know horse-owners in the area.

Also do a google search about the riding club that helps provide security for the airport. There is a group of folks who do this in exchange for the right to ride on the 1000 or so forested acres around the big airport. Most keep theie horses onproperty or stables nearby. Before they built Hardy toll road we used to ride our horses from 610 to spring all the time along the big ROW that became the road.

Looked it up, looks like a great program. Something my wife and I would definitely be interested in.

That seems really close to downtown! Is that an expensive area? I'm in the military, so not made of money.

Laporte/Lomax is on the eastern fringe of town, basically on what you'd call the 3rd loop around the city (146-Hwy6-FM1960).

LaPorte is about 17 mi east of town off hwy 225. It is in the industrial/bay area about adjacent to Barbours Cut (Port of Houston terminal) and close to the new Bayport Terminal. It is also convenient to Ellington field.

One thing I would warn about moving to the south side is the mandatory evacuations during hurricanes. Evacuating livestock (horses) can be tricky so it is something to keep in mind. It would tear at my heart if I had to leave a beloved horse behind.
