Hi,

I will be moving to Houston in November, 2007. My family will move in June 2008. My Son is is doing his 11th Grade - I.B. ( International Baccularate Program) he will start his 12th Grade in Houston. Initially I am looking to saty in an apartment and then buy a New Home. I will have to sell my home in Pittsburgh.
I would highly appreciate all your help. I know that Lamar school has this Program, we have sent an email to the school and have not had a reply.
I will be working in this Zip code: 77070 . I do not know anything about Houston. Lived for 10 years in Pittsburgh.
Thanks in advance for all your help and advive; Please feel free to send responses to my email id.

regards,

I found two schools in Houston from a search for 'international baccalaureate houston'. One west on I10, the other somewhat northwest, neither was Lamar. Your work zip code is NorthWest. Cypress or Cinco Ranch sound like a good orientation for a new home, depending on school and work access.

You'll do well to continue investigation after arriving in Houston and gathering info on the logistics.

If you are in 77070, I believe you are in the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. If Cy-Fair HS has the IB program, ask CFISD about how to get in.

Lamar High School is in the Houston ISD. If you want to send your kid to Lamar, if he gets in (priority is for in-district students) you have to pay out-of-district tuition or take a job with the district.

Cinco Ranch HS is in the Katy ISD. I do not know KISD's out of district policy.

What is the advantage of obtaining an IB degree over a traditional degree?

IB PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAM (age 3-12)

The subject areas of the PYP are language, social studies, mathematics, science and technology, arts, and personal, social and physical education. Students are required to learn a second language during the programme. Assessment is carried out by teachers according to strategies provided by the IBO, and with respect to guidelines to what the students should learn specified in the curriculum model.

The philosophy of the PYP is to make the students into 'inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk takers, knowledgeable, principled, caring, open-minded, well-balanced, and reflective'.

IB MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAM (grade 6-10)
The subjects taught in the MYP are divided into eight subject groups: language A (the student's best language or the language of instruction in the school), language B (a foreign language), humanities, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical education, and technology each of which must receive a minimum of 50 hours per year instruction time. A student could take two "Language A" courses if they have sufficient proficiency in both. Schools are given much flexibility to allow them to introduce subjects which they consider important, and to organize their own student assessment and reporting procedures. However, the MYP gives clear exit criteria for each subject group for MYP 5 (grade 10). The programme is based around five 'areas of interaction': approaches to learning (related to study skills), community and service, Homo Faber ('man the maker'), environment, and health and social education. The areas of interaction are considered a key feature of the MYP. They are not generally taught as separate courses, but rather as themes that are reflected in all subjects. The community and service area requires students to do community service in each year of the programme. In addition, in MYP 5, students complete a personal project on a topic of their choice, with consultation by teachers.

Students who complete the MYP from a school that undergoes external moderation from the IBO receive a 'portfolio of achievement', including documents from the IBO as well as certificates from the school.

IB HIGH SCHOOL

The Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum consists of six subjects (see below), an Extended Essay (EE), of up to 4,000 words, participation in the Theory of Knowledge (ToK), completion of WorldLiterature assignemnts, and a requirement of a minimum of 50 hours each area of CAS (Creative, Action, Service). Grades are awarded from 1 to 7 in each subject with 7 being the highest possible score, and up to three additional points may be awarded depending on the grade results of the EE and ToK essays. The maximum possible total of points in the Diploma Programme is 45 points. In order to receive an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidates must receive a minimum of 24 points. There are a number of failing conditions which will prevent a student from being awarded a Diploma regardless of the points they received (such as non-completion of CAS).

Studies have shown that the IB program prepares students for both university and working life as part of the increasingly global economy: literate, numerate individuals with an international outlook, language skills and with a unique appreciation and experience of foreign cultures.
Along with providing students with a global perspective and strong cultural awareness, recent research shows the rigour of the IB Diploma qualification prepares children for the work load and educational demands that will be required of them in higher education. The studies also show that the curriculum is preparing the students for in an increasingly globalized world.

There's a website that has many resources on the IB program.

Westchester is NOT a private school - It is a part of the Spring Branch Independent School District.

It's listed under the IB program as a private school. I produced the information as it was listed. Either way, it has the IB program which is what the OP asked for.
