We're tentatively interested in buying a house on 39th St, between Broadway and K St.

Can anyone tell me anything about that neighborhood?

I can't tell you much about living there, but driving by - gritty is the word that comes to mind. There are people walking up and down the street at all hours of the night.

Well, the area you are looking in, Carver Park, really isn't that desirable of a place to live in Galveston. I'm sure you've noticed that it's a block from a cemetery, no big deal. But you are considering a house near Broadway so it won't be quiet. That area is comfortably detached from tourist traps. You are also relatively close to Ball High School. The only thing I can't tell you is crime in the area. I don't know if I'd call it gritty like DanielWayne, there are areas in Galveston that are allot worse in appearance. You probably need to spend some time in the area, drive around at different times of day and see the people, the traffic, and make sure you don't see anything you would really hate to have near you.

I've been in Galveston many times and know the city fairly well, but not well enough to pick a "good" neighborhood from a "bad" one. I know that often one is separated from another by nothing more than a city block and that they rarely overlap. And, I also know that most of inner city Galveston looks "gritty," because the houses are older and it's an ocean town. For some reason, ocean towns just look trashy in most cases, except for the high end places which most of us can't afford.

So, I welcome your comments. The one about people walking around at all hours of the day and night is especially welcome as that tells me a lot. Conversely, I've noticed that few houses and businesses around there have bars on the windows and doors, which also tells me a lot.

In the end, your advice about spending some time there is right and is something I intend to do before committing to anything. I especially want to drive through there at 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning.

Thanks to all.

Thanks to whoever sent me that message. That's what I needed to know and about what I figured.

Scratch Carver Park.

We love Galveston. Have lived there a couple of times. Oe of the kids was BOI. We almost moved back a couple of years ago. Last time we lived on Crockett Street. The salt air is hard on paint and cars.

Be careful. The politics of that place will always keep it down. If Texas ever gets casino gambling, Fertitta will make you wish you lived someplace else.
