I am wondering in particular how the job market in Houston is for someone who has just graduated with a BA and is looking for anything entry level that calls for some sort of BA? I have my BA in Geography with some GIS skills and many years of customer service experience. Houston is one of three potential places to move to that I am looking at, and I was wondering how my prospects would be if I was to move there for six months and try to find a job.

You will find a job.. but like all of us college graduates these days.. dont expect it to be what you desire or went to school for... but along the way and as time goes on... who knows.. lots of possibilities in Houston. I moved here three months ago.. I have marketing management experience... and right now I am a corporate accountant.. (my degree is in entrepreneurship). crazy how things go

I agree, there are definitely jobs available in GIS, but you won't get the dream job first (and really, this applies to entry level jobs in any field). It might also take you a while to find one in your field if you didn't have internship experience in college.

Houston is a really good place to move if you have GIS skills because the petroleum industry uses GIS a lot for planning out the locations of infrastructure. That said, the oil companies also tend to pay GIS people more than other places, so don't expect Exxon to be your first job. You might have to take a job with a city/county, a private planning firm or something else that pays less in order to get experience. I know a guy who worked for a city for a few years and then got a GIS job with BP.
