Me and some friends will be visiting Houston in May and were wondering what area of the city would be best to get a hotel. We are all in our mid twenties and want to be close to nightlife, restaurants, shopping, etc. Anybody have any suggestions? Also, if anyone has any suggestions on any dance clubs I would appreciate it.

Stay in Midtown or Downtown. Go to Main St. in the heart of downtown (start at the corner of Texas Ave. and Main St.), there you will find pubs and clubs. You can start off at a well known establishment called "The Flying Saucer" located around there on Main St. But don't just hang there, do a little pub crawl and check out a few others along Main St. That area has good nightlife but it's really going down around Midtown and the Washington Ave strip. In Midtown go to Celtic Gardens, Pub Fiction, Gloria's (Latin flavor), 5th Amendment. The place you'll really find them all is on Washington Ave. Get a cab, don't drive to any of these areas. Houston has a program called "Six in the City" where it's only $6 cab (minus tip) to get around to any of these districts. When you go to the Washington Ave district, have the cab drop you off at Brixx, that's in the middle of it all and you can bounce around from there. Make sure you visit Eight (next door to Brixx), Pearl Bar and Hughes Hangar both down the street. Trust me, there's no shortage of bars and clubs on Washington Ave. Again, don't drive to any of these places, Houston Police DWI Task Force is always in full effect around these areas plus traffic's horrible and parking is expensive and a hassle. Also, almost all the establishments will be cover free but bring $$ just in case. Enjoy your stay in H-town and make sure to get a bite to eat at one of the food trucks when you end the night and stumble out

Oh and shopping, go to the Galleria Mall in the Uptown district. Just ask cab or whoever to take you to the Galleria Mall. It's one of the biggest malls in the U.S. so don't peter out

Hotel ZAZA for sure. Unfortunately Houston is a spread out city, so no matter where you stay you're not going to be close to everything. As far as Nightlife and dancing, hit up Washington Ave. Shopping, the Gallaria. There are also some good restaurants on Washington, Benjy's(which also has a nice lounge upstairs), Coppa, Max's wine dive bar. Although there are great restaurants all over. ZAZA has a pretty cool bar downstairs.

Thanks for the help! I didn't know about the Washington strip. We were thinking about staying around the galleria, do you think that's a good idea if we plan on spending a lot of time at Washington ave?

Downtown without a doubt. It is next to all of the good places. I would not stay in the Galleria unless you plan to do lots of shopping. Midtown and Washington is where the fun is. I honestly think Midtown is a better area now than Washington. It is more condensed with bars and places to eat. Washington has had lots of bars fold lately. The only ones I really go to are Kung Fu and Taps.

The galleria area is cool, there are some bars around there. Washington is about 5 miles, you could probably catch a cab for about $15.

That is why all my friends that live in the Galleria always go to Midtown. There are basically two good bars in the Galleria area. I grew up in that area and lived there two years after college. I have a few friends who live there, but are leaving after their lease is up. Traffic is brutal there. It is a great area, but not where young people hang out.

Have dinner at Fish, Cyclone Anaya's, or Blackfinn. Then walk over to Lil Woodrows, Dogwood, Drinkery, Celtic Gardens, and Pub Fiction. That is kind of the Midtown thing.

Washington you hit Copa, The Blue Fish, El Tiempo, or Benjy's. Then hit Kung Fu and Taps. There are a few others on Washington, but it is a long street and they are spread out. All the places I mentioned are on the West side.

You also might want to check out Hendrick and Roak on upper Kirby.

The Rice Village also is fun. Lots of places to eat like Mi Luna. Great bars like Volcano, Kay's Lounge, The Gingerman.

Then there are all the great places to eat and drink in the Heights. But without a car it is not all walking distance.

I would stay at the Courtyard downtown.

If you're just looking to do Washington I wouldn't stay in Uptown (Galleria) b/c it's a bit farther out than in Downtown, and like someone else mentioned, the traffic is HORRIBLE!! You'll see what we mean if you go shop. I think it'll actually be a little cheaper if you stay downtown. Try Priceline b/c dowtown hotels always have offer up there when you do the price bidding thing. Either way it's all within miles of each other and you can't go wrong either way really...after a few drinks none of this will matter lol.
