Hello all.I'm a single 25 year old black male and I plan on moving to Houston from*Detroit, MI. I want to pursue a career in firefighting or ems as I'm certified as an emt and firefighter here in Michigan.my questions are:How are the neighborhoods? How are the women there? Friendly? How are public safety careers there for the near future? How's the weather?

Default Hmmm....

I would say everything you asked about, and more, is much better in Houston than Detroit! I'd rather live in Houston than Detroit, regardless of circumstances. Sadly, Detroit's best days are behind her.... for now anyway. You can only go up here.

The thing about Houston is that there are all types of neighborhoods. You have the super expensive gated inner-loop (urban) communities, the affordable urban neighborhoods with "character" and lot's of cool shops and bars, you have the suburbs in all manner and flavor, rural areas not too far from town, barrios, ghettos, fly-in neighborhoods and lakefront neighborhoods. There are areas where you have lot's of ethnic and racial diversity and areas that certain groups migrate. If you can't find an area you like, you are either not looking very hard or unrealistic (ie. you're not going to find a new 3,000 sq ft home with a huge yard for $200,000 inside the loop).

I personally believe that Houston has more than it's fair share of pretty women, and for the most part, the attitude seems to be in check. However, it is kind of like the neighborhood situation, if you go to the country western bar out in Tomball, you probably will find very few Asian women. If you eat lunch at Frenchy's off of Scott street, you're not likely to run into white housewives from the suburbs. There will be bars where your job title and paycheck mean more to the women than personality and other bars that you'll be more popular with some ink and a bike, but in Houston, you'll find the places to go to meet women (be it a bar on Washington or a singles' class at Second Baptist) by asking around and describing what you're looking for.

As far as EMS and firefighters jobs, I have no clue.

Weather- do you like mild winters, early springs and late falls and hot humid long summers? If so, you'll love Houston. The weather is one of the very few things that lacks variety and choice in Houston.

Pedro, you forgot to let him know one thing about the weather in Houston, that is: Either we get no rain or too much, there seems to be no in between. IT FLOODS IN HOUSTON.

We do get a lot of rain, but for the most part, it does not put anyone in danger except for kunckleheads, including those who panic at one foot of rain and stopping dead in their tracks in their vehicle endangering everyone behind them. Since you no doubt have experience with ice and snow, you won't need to grow a new pair here if it floods like others who need to grow some.
