Is there actually an airport next to Katy Mills Mall, or a planned one, and if so, how big is it (private airport? regularly scheduled flights?) I can't find anything definite on the Internet one way or another. I saw a map saying there was something called "Katy Hawk International Airport" just to the east of Katy Mills Mall. There's been threats to put a big airport on the west side, but I thought they'd fallen through.

I'm looking at houses on the west side, including Katy, and I wouldn't want to live too close to an airport. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Default History

No worries, Katy Hawk no longer exists. It was an airstrip built in the 80s if I recall correctly. It was never really used, and was bulldozed to make Katy Mills Mall.

There is the Houston Executive Airport near the Igloo plant off I-10 on Cardiff road, but it is further west between Brookshire and Katy and it is a viable airport with a long enough runway to support 737 jet aircraft. This one will most likely become a passenger airport in the future.

If Houston was this big about 40 years ago I would say that a third passenger airport in the west would have been up and running, but the US is not the great infrastructure nation it used to be, and the FAA is in the habit of downsizing not expanding.

Even 15 years ago when I was a kid, the US had so many airlines, flights were so uncomplicated, not, we have what, 4 major airlines instead of 30. Smaller airports are being phased out. We have less and less direct flights.

In this day and age you are lucky that your drive to the airport is only an hour.
If they had to do it again I bet the FAA would have had SA and Austin share an airport. Neither of them receive as much traffic as Hobby.

There is no way Houston will add a third airport.

I don't know. If the growth on the west side continues the way it has been I think it could be very possible to see a third airport. Executive is already equipped to handle a 737, all it would need is a terminal facility.

It was the Katy Prairie, and the Atwater Prairie Chicken, that derailed Houston's west side airport, remember?

But actually Houston does have a third airport now , its called Ellington Field and is in southeast Houston, lol

There will be a airport west of Houston someday, but it will prob. be halfway to San Antonio. lol

Jack beat me too it. Ellington is equipt and authorized to handle commercial traffic, and does function as a reliever airport.

Continental had a passenger terminal and flights out of there to Intercontinental for many years. It was very convenient too. Since they only flew the regional jets, at most there were 40-50 people there at a time so pretty much no wait for security and free parking. But they never made money on it and when they start cutting back that was one of the things to go. A ticket from IAH-wherever was the same price as EFD-IAH-wherever.
