My husband and I moved to Houston in September and we're now looking for a home to buy. We've been renting in Midtown which is fine, but neither of us love it. We really like Montrose and the Heights but we're not thrilled by the price tag. My husband is a professor at UH, so we'd like to stay within the loop to keep the commute reasonable. We've been doing some research and both really love the look and feel of Idylwood and Old Sixth Ward. Being new to the area, I'm interested to hear opinions of both areas, especially from those of you who live in the neighborhoods. I'm also interested to hear suggestions of areas that we may have overlooked. We're from New England, so the historic areas are much more desirable to us and feel more like home than the huge McMansions and zero lot line homes that seem so popular in many of the areas of Houston. I look forward to hearing your opinions. Thanks!

Look into Eastwood as well. It's a historic neighborhood that should still be more affordable than Montrose and the Heights, plus it's practically on UH's doorstep.

Idylwood, Eastwood, Broadmoor and adjacent subdivisions are in 77023. They're home to quite a few UH-Central, UH-Downtown and UH-CLC faculty and staff. Houses for sale there - even those that have not been renovated - usually get snapped up quickly.

The sixth Ward is nice but its prices have gone up like the Heights. Units don't stay on the market long.

Thanks for all of your input. I will check out those areas. It seems like inventory is limited in Idylwood and Old Sixth Ward, so I'm thrilled to have some other places to check out.
