Ive been reading about homestead exemption and im just not following the wording completely.

I bought my home Jan 30th 2012. So should I have filed homestead in 2013, or do i have to wait until 2014 since i wont have lived in the home a full tax year until the end of 2013?

Thanks for any help with my ignorance about this.

You have to be in the home on January 1, of the intitial year you want to claim the exemption. So, yes, if you have filed for it, you can claim it on this years tax bills (2013).

Edit: I re- read your post. If you closed 1/31/12, you would have been in the home one year on 1/31/13. Did you close in 2012, or 2013?

I believe you can file in 2013.

We bought a home in March of 2013, and we plan to file for exemption next year in 2014.

Send in the form now, so they can adjust for the 2013 taxes.

We sent our form in too early. We closed Sept 2012. We got a letter back stating we were denied for that year, but approved for 2013. I don't think there's any problem with sending the form in early.

I moved into my house in October of 2012 and submitted my homestead in January of 2013 for the 2013 tax year and it was accepted. The way I read it, is the year you live in your house on January 1st is the year you can claim a homestead.

Correct, because the tax year has not ended; therefore, the taxes that were in effect when you moved in stayed that way for the rest of the year. (If my wording made sense, lol)
