This has been said in the thread, but I'd like to reiterate. The movers/shakers and ultra wealthy of Houston tend to mingle on a very big-time charity circuit of galas, luncheons, and events. Many of these events have tables that sell for $50,000 to $250,000, but often individual tickets can be purchased for $250 - $500 to get in the door and enjoy the festivities.

The big Charity Galas are usually full of the CEOs, wealthy families, local sports celebrities, etc.

Wow. Heck that sounds like a lot of fun too. 250 to try your hand out at some networking doesn't sound bad at all.

What other events besides fundraisers? I can understand why there are so many too. Big business mostly funds the big arts. With the lack of public investment in the arts it seems like the art culture wouldn't survive on it's own without generous benefactors. While this doesn't seem like a problem to me, doesn't it stifle a bit of the creativity?

Anyways, I know the events are more than for just the arts, there is also medical research but the med industry stands on it's own two legs.

As you noted, there are many events for the arts (ballerina, symphony, theaters ,Menil Collection ect...).

There are also a quite a few events benefiting the medical field like St. Jude's cancer research. Most of these events are semi-formal, to formal, to black tie.

Most of the fundraisers take place between fall and late spring.

As for the younger folk, try all those Young Professional groups that have been popping up around town lately.
things like candlelighters, young professional engineering groups, ASME, the MFAH has a young professional groups that's typically for the upwardly mobile. ive found the higher end restaurant bar scene is mostly lower middle management, new guys, and the women are secretaries or office managers but they go to network.

As you know the Houston music scene can't really compare to that of Austin or Dallas, but there is a doom scene. Houston Doom Brigade does a good job of getting good bands to play on Houston. That being said, we have to go out of town to play good shows.
