Hi. How about jobs for Industrial, Quality, Manufacturing or Processes Engineers in The Woodlands or surrounding areas? Hard to get? Headhunters? Salary? Preferred degree?

My wife (she is the engineer) and I are planning to move to The Woodlands for the quality life we are looking for but we don't have any secure job yet. I can see in job posting sites like indeed.com a lot of engineering job posts in the Houston area. We prefer The Woodlands to live but don't want be drive more than one hour.

Any information will be appreciated.

Get a job, then figure out where to live. The Woodlands is 45 minutes North of the city.

I am an industrial engineer and work in the spring area. I work for an oil/gas equipment manufacturer. There are a lot of manufacturing/industrial engineer jobs in the north side of houston - especially oil/gas. The Woodlands offers a lot of oil/gas jobs with the operators (EXXON, ANADARKO). Those engineering jobs are harder to get unless you interned or have connections. Another way to get in is to have expertise in an oil/gas niche.

The Woodlands is 31 miles north of the city. In traffic, it takes about 45 minutes to get into Houston. However, without traffic, it takes about 30 minutes. And before I get my head chewed off, I drive it everyday, so I know how long it takes. Why is it sad that it's "so far?" I think it is a good thing.

If kids and schools are not a factor, personally I would live closer into the city (if I could afford to). Personal preference only - in the city is more interesting than the burbs.

If she gets a job in the energy corridor - that 45 minute drive just jumped to way over an hour. That's why everyone keeps saying to get the job first.

Definitely secure a job first otherwise you'll have no idea where you're going to be working and if you don't know that, then how can you decide on where to live. The greater Houston area is very large and there's always traffic during rush hour.
