No, it's not open season on Houston cyclist and I highly doubt any cyclist who has been injured or killed in Houston was harmed by someone in a car who was just out looking for a cyclist to hurt. Accidents happen, people die in cars every day in Houston.

But the same note you can not just delcare Houston streets have to share the road with bikes, when Houston streets are clearly not designed with that in mind, ither create true dicated bike lanes or dont but this half ass attempt by city officals is clealry not working

Very true but let's be realistic, the city of Houston wasn't designed for bike traffic and that isn't going to improve for decades. In many areas there isn't room for dedicated bike lanes and even with them bikes are still going to be in danger.

This is true. It is illegal for a car to drive 35mph on a freeway and thus slow down traffic. But yet I often have to dodge bikes on 518 and on Egret Bay where the speed limit is 45 to 55, and the bikes are moving MUCH slower than traffic (which often travels ABOVE the speed limit). Heck, people tailgate ME in my neighborhood for driving 5-10 over the speed limit... and then we have the cyclists who are determined to inject themselves into this aggressive traffic... This ain't the Netherlands people.

I am all for more bike lanes, bike friendly neighborhoods, etc, but until then a little common sense is in order by a lot of cyclists. Unfortunately here, the car culture wins out.

If you've read many of my posts, you'll know that I support more light rail, bike lanes/paths and pedestrian friendly infrastructure.

I will say that when I'm driving in the loop, I'm much more likely to encounter a person on a bike who feels they own the road than a cyclist who wants to share it with me. At least this has been my personal experience.

What you don't understand, is that it is SAFER for a cyclist to take the lane. It is better for a car to pass a cyclist in the other lane than to try to squeeze past the cyclist. And just out of curiosity, what would 'sharing' the road look like to you? Legally, cyclists have every right a motorist has to the roads.

Granted there are some terrible cyclists here, but most people I've seen just don't know how to drive in Houston with cyclists (or with other modes of transportation for that matter). Well, big news, people: we're going to have to pay attention more while commuting. Not only are there going to be cyclists and mopeds/motorcycles, but there will also be a rail. I think a lot of people spend so much time in their cars here they tend to go on autopilot and it's going to take a while for people to adjust. I've seen stupid things from both cyclists and motorists and try to avoid the same mistakes myself. People should really take it as an opportunity to pay attention.

As a fellow cyclist I can appreciate the message. But cyclists have to do their part too. Wear helmets on the roadway, have lights on your bike, and obey the same laws that cars do.

Don't be like the critical mass idiots.
