Hello everyone,

I maybe moving back to Houston after 30 years away. I would like a townhome to buy close in. I'm looking at zip codes 77030, 77063, and 77057. Would anyone know the best zip code for a single gay jewish father that is fairly safe and open?

Thank you all so much.

Westbury 77035
Meyerland
Bellaire
Montrose if the budget allows.

77057 runs a little on the conservative side and not very jewish. The townhouse scene is probably different. People just don't interact at all in those communities.

You will be ok just about anywhere, but above listed neighborhoods really tick all your boxes. No one cares if you are gay or jewish. But if you are looking for more people that are gay or jewish those neighborhoods work.

The Heights & Montrose are very liberal and welcoming of everyone.

Townhouses in Montrose run 350-700K. There are not as many townhouses in the Heights. 77006 is the area you should look into. Most any neighborhood in the loop is gay friendly. The Galleria is not bad either. It depends on your job and what age your child is. Schools will dictate a lot of where you want to go.

I agree with EasilyAmused, it's unlikely you'd encounter anyone in those areas that would have an issue with someone being gay and/or Jewish. (Caveat: sometimes if we focus too much on any way we're different from the people around us, they may sense and react to that in some way. Of course, that can happen anywhere.)

In terms of my preference, I'd rank those 3 ZIP codes in this order: 77057, 77063, then 77030. In the first 2, I'd prefer to be north of Westheimer, especially if I had a child living with me. The closer north you can get (i.e., closer to Buffalo Bayou), the better.

I have less experience with 77030, but my guess is the western part might be OK for you (nice residential area close to Rice U, TMC, and West U). The eastern part is more apartments and people I've known who lived there (students and TMC employees) didn't particularly like it.

Need to really know your budget and if your kid is in elementary or middle school. Some of the areas you listed have few townhouses. There are other areas to look at.

77057 is also not very affordable. My in laws bought a town home in that area and it cost more than our home in the Heights- comparable size and everything. That's crazy. They have to share a wall with their neighbors we do not. I'm sure there are exceptions.

I agree that no one will care if you are jewish or gay in most areas unless you live pretty far out. Heights or Montrose are probably your best bet though in terms of finding others in similar mindsets.

I won't even touch the school you are zoned to issue as you are a teacher and I'm sure fully aware of the good and bad. It's just such a controversial subject in Houston. Besides, you didn't mention if the kid will be living with you or not.
