HBC Bike Laws

Quote:
No person shall ride a bicycle upon a sidewalk in the City of Houston within a business district or where prohibited by sign. A business district is defined as "the territory contiguous to and including a roadway when, within 600 feet along such roadway, there are buildings in use for business or industrial purpose which occupy 300 feet collectively on both sides of the roadway". Also, bicyclists are required to yield to pedestrians and give an audible signal to pedestrians when riding on approved sidewalks. (In general, bicyclists are permitted to ride on sidewalks unless prohibited by local ordinances, although experienced cyclists usually agree that it is much safer to ride on the street and follow the laws as they apply to any other vehicle.)

If you cannot deal with people who use alternate methods of transportation (bikes), then take your car ONLY on the highways where no bikes are allowed.

I prefer bike paths, but there are not enough of them here in Houston and you really can't use them to commute on (and there are people who want to save gas money and commute by bike for the exercise and the economic benefit).

We live in a community and we need to have all people respected.

Good. Then let's start with the bicyclists respecting the fact that two-lane, two-way roads with no sidewalks or bike paths are off limits.

After 100% adoption of this principle by all bicyclists, we can then talk about additional measures to accommodate the needs of bicyclists.

Ah, the things people will complain about only to save 20 seconds on their commute...or to get to that next red light/stop sign faster.

Actually 20mph is pretty good from what I've seen. Have you ever noticed the people riding in the roads are the ones that in no way can remotely keep up with traffic, yet they take a whole lane?

Yeah, I'm takling to you 200lb momma, riding on her 1980s 12 speed, on Memorial through Bunker Hill, where it's says biking prohibited, at 10 mph holding up a string of cars at 5:30 pm. But hey, at least she had blinky lights all over her.

Agreed and the reasons are political and because stuff like this is done for public consumption rather than to have any real effect. People complain all the time to elected officials and politicians about speeding - they almost never complain about people going too fast. But slow drivers do cause plenty of accidents, possibly because they are oblivious to what is going on around them.

As far as the cyclists go, they are the loud and vocal group and thus policies and action is tailored around them. The people who get annoyed at cyclists don't band together the way cyclists do to defend their ability to cycle on roads. Consequently, the policies end up benefiting the cyclists even though they arguably are more disruptive than motor vehicle drivers.

I wish they spent the money on something that benefits everyone instead of something like this which only benefits the few.

Bicyclist need to stick to the trails or the parks, that would solve everything.
