Lone Star College in Katy VS Harris County Jail Downtown

I know nothing about Houston, so which would you do and why? Same pay, same work hours, have a family and young child. Want to buy a house in the next few years.

Please Advise.

I would take the job at Lone Star without hesitation. Buy a house close to the college and enjoy a short commute. No reason to commute downtown if you don't have too...

@Rip808: Thank you! I am leaning towards the Katy option, but I have never been there so I don't know what I would be getting myself in to.

Does anyone know anything about the Lone Star College - Cypress Center?? It is apparently pretty new...

This is what you are getting yourself into: Cinco Ranch by Newland Communities

Cinco Ranch is the top selling master planned community in all of Texas and top 3 nation wide. The Cypress Center is on the "north" side. People refer to the north side as north of I-10. Cinco Ranch is on the south side and its generally more desirable than North Katy. North Katy is a cluster of small communities clustered together with a lot of "starter" homes. It's fine, but I would never invest in the north side. If you go west of the Grand Parkway and North of I-10 I think that area is going to shape out nicely.

Looks very nice; thank you for taking the time to send me advice.

Is Cinco Ranch its own city??

I have been told, if I am planning to purchase a home in Katy, that it needs to be inside city limits or else it can become annexed by the city of Houston. So, is that true of Cinco Ranch too? Is that why East of Grand Parkway wouldn't be a good investment area? Sorry for all the questions... haha.

The commute. If you have the opportunity to work in the same area you live in here in Houston you take it.

FWIW, Cinco Ranch is very nice and also higher priced then most surrounding neighborhoods. If you're looking for a great deal on a house you won't find it there. They are not their own city but that area is considered the Katy area. Sure Houston could grab the Katy area up one day but not very likely at all. There's a City of Katy too that consists of older neighborhoods. There are a few new neighborhoods inside the city but homes are going in the 300s I believe. I know they are about to start on a new master plan community in north Katy with homes starting in the 200s. North of i10 is fine, that area is next to experience the growth spurt. East of grand parkway is fine too, homes are a little older but you get more established neighborhoods with bigger trees.

Same pay is pretty much a no-brainer. Save wear and tear on your vehicle, as well as gas money and your body by living in Katy. If the pay was better downtown, then pick Webster.
