My parents love looking at big, old houses with unique architecture. They are coming to visit next week and I would love to take them around Houston.

Does anyone have any favorites streets/areas to drive around?

Although I don't cruise neighborhoods the following are nice to pass through

The historic Heights - older homes
Riverside Terrace - older homes
River Oaks - mix of old and new
Memorial Villages mixed old and new

Not really a drive-by but Bayou Bend is a big, old historic house that is definitely worth visiting in my opinion.

If you have the time, drive down Broadway in Galveston.

Just so you know, the grassy part of the main garden at bayou bend has been torn up. We just went last weekend and it is not at it's best.

Heights boulevard, although some tear downs and replacements, is nice. Some offstreets in the area are good. Its worth a drive just for dinner and afternoon shopping. Old west university/braeswood is awesome. Thats real historic houston - around med center. No idea why people dont know of that area. It was the river oaks of houston before river oaks was ever the place to be

The renovations of the third ward off yellowstone are amazing. The people moving into those old grand houses are doing something real special

Some unique architecture can be found on streets in westbury and glenbrook valley but that may seem a little more out of the way. Some real glamourous 60s homes are there

Driving through the historic Sixth Ward is a treat. There's also the Glenwood Cemetery nearby if you want to see famous names and grand monuments. Really a beautiful, serene place.

There are many well-preserved homes and buildings in Galveston's East End Historic District and along the Strand. Your parents would probably enjoy going there to sightsee, visit the Elissa and eat fresh Gulf seafood.

Start at Greenbriar and 59. Go up North Blvd. and South Blvd. Take Rice Blvd. to Main Street then drive around and through the Rice campus. Exit the Rice Campus and drive through Hermann Park. Drive west all the way out Sunset to Buffalo Speedway. Take Buffalo Speedway north until it turns into it turns into Claremont. Then drive through River Oaks. Don't miss Willowick and Lazy Lane.
