Hi

Me and my wife will be moving to Houston in March 2015. We will be in temporary accommodation for the first month and then need to rent. I will be working in the north West (290 & Gessner Road) and my wife will be actively seeking work. So we need to be in a location that suits both of us.

I dont mind 30-45 min commute as long as the wife can easily go and meet recruiters etc for the job hunt. I frequently travel to Houston so have an idea regarding the traffic. We have no kids so no restriction with respect to school district but would like an area where there are restaurants and a few things to do. Apartment preferable for the 1st year. Any suggestions on good neighborhoods? Not a big fan of I10 from Katy in the mornings but not sure if it is as bad as it looks. Please advise.

Thanks

I moved here back in March 2011 and live in Cypress. Lot's of good neighbourhoods out here but more suited to families with kids, good schools etc. As that doesn't apply to you I'm not sure it would appeal so much. There's a decent choice of restaraunts but nothing like more downtown type areas.

One thing that goes against the area id the commute into town on 290 but as you're just inside the beltway, that wouldn't be too bad for you.

Hope this helps, feel free to PM me if you need anything else, there's a bunch of expat Scots out where we live and we've built up a decent wee social group.

Go to har.com and look up rentals in the NW. There are lots of great areas up there.

I'm thinking Jersey Village would be a great option for you. Very affordable with decent access to the city.

You could also do Spring Brnch north of I10. Maybe Spring Shadows or neighborhood around there. They are older homes, but you will get the best access into the city. You are minutes from Memorial City Mall and all those shops/ restaurants, the Heights funky restaurants and shops, and even Uptown/ Galleria.

Jersey Village is 5 mins to work so will definitely consider that.

Thanks

We have a home very near there north of 290. There are newer apartments at Philippine and the Beltway and a bit further north along West Rd east and west of the Beltway. West Rd actually curves south and turns into Gessner just east of the beltway, your commute would literally be just a few minutes. It's a very convenient location to downtown, the airport... pretty much all of the metro area from southwest to north.

I would avoid the apartments south of 290 in Spring Branch. Homes in Spring Shadows are fine if you do not care about schools, but the surrounding apartments are dreadful.
