I recently switched to Tmo from Verizon. Overall, I've found coverage within the Houston area to be comparable, with LTE speeds as good as or better than Verizon. However, Tmo's signals don't penetrate buildings as well as Verizon's. For my house, I needed a cell booster to get a decent signal indoors (Tmo provides one for free).

Also, Tmo's coverage in rural parts of TX is mediocre compared to AT&T and especially Verizon.

Overall I don't regret switching - Tmo's plan was far cheaper that AT&T or Verizon, for my needs, and included perks like 5 GB of tethering thrown in for each line, and free texting and (non-LTE) data when traveling abroad. But I wouldn't count on it if I spent a lot of time in rural areas.

I travel the city and have had T-Mobile for years. The only dead zones I have found is an area in Cinco and an area in Sugar Land. I am in those areas a lot - and it is inconvenient. Happy with them otherwise.

I have had TMO in the Houston Area since before they were called Tmobile (15+ years), coverage and service in and around the Metro area is excellent, their plans, features and prices are arguably some of the best in the industry. Yes, the signal penetration is weaker inside buildings, but the recently acquired 700Mhz Block A spectrum (Band 12LTE) will fix most of those issues (of course you need a phone that supports that frequency, but new devices rolling out now will have that). Wifi Calling, which is included in most phones sold by TMO, can also help alleviate issues inside buildings.

Unless you travel extensively in the rural countryside, you should have no issues. I had 3G or 3.5G coverage for most of the time on I-45 going to Dallas (even with a non-Tmobile branded phone which does not have some of the TMO bands) just this past weekend.
