Here are the boundaries for the west side of HISD. Shadowbriar is now a boundary transfer option school similar in nature to pin oak middle school. Ashford elementary is now a EE-5 campus. Students currently zoned to the schools will remain...I think. Also, entering kindergarteners are exempt.

Scroll to page 2 to see the changes.

I think that Royal Oaks should move into HISD. They could try seceding from Alief ISD, or HISD could absorb Alief ISD. Then Royal Oaks students can enjoy Shadowbriar, West Briar, and Westside. Property values will be MUCH BETTER

Royal oaks residents would probably still send their kids to private schools. The few people I know in there are shocked I send my child to HISD.

A few years ago Royal Oaks residents, who as noted don't send their children to public schools, tried (and failed I believe) to take over the Alief ISD board. I believe they were upset about the tax rate and wanted to lower it, since they pay the biggest tax bills in the district but don't use the schools.

Regarding the boundary change, I know Briar Village residents were rather upset - they thought they would be zoned to Shadowbriar. I don't know if they're more OK with Daily. Being zoned to Bush has a major upward impact on property values.

I had seen and posted this through the Briar Forest Super Neighborhood website a while back. One thing I am wondering that hadn't occurred to me then: a couple of years ago a fairly big deal was made of Ashford Elementary becoming a dual language school. Will that still be the case with the rezoning? Just curious.

I don't think they would send their kids to the pre-reorganization Shadowbriar, but it's being reconfigured as a magnet school.

Even if West Briar and Westside don't appeal to them:
  • The property tax rates of HISD are below that of Alief ISD (unless something has changed)
  • One would probably command higher property values if she/he is zoned to Westside instead of to Alief schools
  • They would have access to HISD magnet schools

Also if Alief ISD was absorbed by HISD, HISD can gerrymander the boundaries so fewer crappy apartments are zoned to Westside: more of those kids would be sent to Alief schools

AliefISd is huge and will never be absorbed by HISD. That area is a big mishmash of HISD, SBISD, AliefISd, and KatyISD. The boundaries aren't going to change.

Yeah, I personally don't see the entire tax base of Alief ISD wanting to merge (since they have Westchase which gives financial support). As long as the tax base is there, it won't be in a North Forest situation.
