Houston Nightclub Gaslamp Accused of Bias Over its Cover Policy | Houston Press

This is well known among young party people. I am glad to see this place and hopefully other Midtown establishments get the attention they deserve.

Anecdotal, but Houston by far has the most discriminating practice when it comes to nightclubs. I love the: "Do you have a second ID?" line they sometimes ask. This happened to a lot of my out-of-state friends. Who carries two forms of ID?

Incidents like this have been happening for a long time in Midtown, horrible reflection on a city so diverse as Houston.

Some people are talking about getting Quanel X involved. I can already imagine the Black Panther Party marching here on a Friday night.

Default Some people do not get out much...

For those crying foul, have you ever been to clubs in LA, NY, or how about London, Barcelona, Vienna? This is standard practice. The door "gentleman" will look at you, and determine if you go in, or not. If you're not deemed 'cool', or 'fit', you get the dreaded 'NEXT', simple as that.

Since these men were Black, I expect Mr. Q will be knocking on their door soon.

Isn't discrimination at clubs part of the reason people go to them? The club stays popular as long as the majority of male patrons are really photogenic, or wealthy (women are preferred to be attractive &/or well dressed). See and be seen...making it exclusive, makes it more desirable to some. It happens clubs frequented by other races as well.

When younger I was turned away at several 'hot' clubs (have a great face for radio) in other cities (Chicago, LA, Miami). I was later let in a couple of them when I had an attractive date. Thats just how it goes. I'm sure if I went to the club today I'd have to pay a cover or get turned away. Besides if you look older than 35 you probably wont be getting in without flashing cash.

There's a difference in looking "cool" and being discriminated because of your race.

These guys are old as hell they should be at home with the wife. :P. Seriously, I used to like that scene now you could not pay me to hang out at midtown on a Friday or Saturday night (guess I am old too).

It is important to the business model of this establishment that young pretty Anglo ladies feel comfortable - they are THE key clientele. How can you expect them to feel comfortable when they would have to share space with, and possibly even be talked to by, a bunch of men whose ethnicity and physical shape are not similar to the sorority / fraternity parties they hung out at in UT Austin, LSU etc.? How is the club supposed to make money otherwise? Sheesh people. (/s, well sort of, OK not really.)

Maybe they just didn't want people who looked more like bouncers than they did.

Who knows if they discriminate, but I imagine if these two (with pictures) were white, they would get the same treatment. These places tend to want a younger, hipper crowd, not a bunch of middle aged attorneys and accountants.
