I've seen so many posts about the traffic - are there good jobs in the burbs or nearby towns? Or are those salaries a lot lower? I understand you might need to commute because of a job transfer. It sounds like rents in good neighborhoods with good schools are pretty high in the city itself, at least for a single parent family (we need rent around $600.) Houston seems pretty overwhelming to figure out as far as neighborhoods go - does anyone know of any good area guides/sites?
Suggestions for nearby towns?

We're looking at the Houston area so my dd could get treatment at Childrens Hospital, she would need occasional follow-up care but not so much that we'd necessarily need to live in Houston itself. I do have hospital/medical secretary experience so maybe I'd be lucky enough to be hired at one of the hospitals there

I would like to suggest the Pearland area. You would be close to the Medical Center (an easy 10 min drive up Hwy 288). The crime is low, and there is a friendly atmosphere about the town.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll hunt for more info on those areas. We're looking to move in December, trying to decide where we'd like to be for the holidays.
