So if you had a choice to send your kid to either of these schools, which one would you choose? Provided you live very close to Kinkaid. I do like the idea of St. John's but the commute scares me.

It's whatever school you can actually get your child into. The acceptance rate is very low for both schools, unless you have an inside track. Apply to many private schools in the hope of getting into one. If you do get accepted into both, go with the closer school. They are both excellent schools and you can't go wrong either way.

FYI they get thousands upon thousands of applications. Plenty of very intelligent and wealthy kids are turned away every year. It's a numbers game, and there are only so many spots available.

Apply to both and once the admission decision has been made, think about other factors then.

St. Johns is more prestigious and if you have someone in the house who can drive kids to school everyday without worrying about getting late for work, its doable.

St. John's has more National Merit Scholars and more Ivy League admissions. It may be easier to be in the top of the class at Kinkaid than at SJS but both schools are filled with bright, talented kids. Kinkaid has more of an emphasis on the arts. Both have good boys and girls sports teams in a variety of sports ranging from football to swimming. The academics are challenging at both, especially if your child takes honors/AP classes. SJS has a slightly lower admission rate. Both prioritize legacies and athletes.

The traffic between Kinkaid and SJS can be beastly, especially at rush hour in the morning and evening. I often drop my kid off at school and then drive to my office in Upper Kirby and vice versa. It takes at least 30-45 minutes one way.

My daughter attends Kinkaid. She loves it. She is into theater and cross country. She has lots of friends at St. John's. Tour both, go to the open houses, and if your child is admitted have him/her shadow at both.

Go to the SJS/Kinksid football game at Rice Stadium this Friday night if you want to get a feel for the vibe of both schools. Spend some time on both sides of the stands.

If your child is accepted to the school of your choice, and that is what you really want, the drive will not deter you.

When I attended Kinkaid, and lived outside the Beltway, I was part of a carpool group to spread the driving burden around. And what a burden it was - 45 minutes to an hour to drive just five miles in the morning! Traffic was that bad in the 1970s and 1980s.

Do the parents at those schools still organize carpools?

Didn't go to Kinkaid, but had a similar commute in High School from my house in Stafford to DeBakey in the 1980s. It's weird to be stuck in traffic on the freeway when you are 18 years old.

I carpooled with 2 other friends.

They're not free. Though I detect a whiff of sarcasm here.

If your child can get accepted to St John's, that's where you go.
