I always check Houston Transtar before leaving the house now, but thanks for the reminder. I just added the traffic app to my new phone. I switched from iPhone to an Android OS last week, so I have to redo all my apps .

There's 23 essential apps for living in Houston? LOL. What have I been doing all these years?

Some of the apps are redundant. You don't really need a traffic app if you use Waze, because Waze automatically routes you based on traffic. E.g., if it knows there's a backup on the 10, it'll direct you to use surface streets, for example.

My Dad has been trying to get me to use Waze forever. I guess I assumed it was a bit gimmicky. Doesn't it rely on a certain number of people nearby having the app as well?

Yes, it does. Waze is community-based traffic and navigation app. Drivers share real-time traffic and road info.
For single drivers I find it dangerous to communicate, and alert other drivers while driving. You have to hit the icon, then choose the appropriate alert from the menu, then there are additional questions to answer before you can hit the "send" button. All that while in traffic??? Crazy! You cannot possibly expect somebody running that app while driving to focus, in the slightest, on driving. In HOUSTON!

If you report a hazard using Waze, please, I implore you, report yourself as "Distracted idiot driver using this shockingly stupid app while attempting to operate a two-ton motor vehicle. Be-freaking-ware!"

Spoiler

Each of those little icons on the map, invite a tap. What's this? What's that? Who's over there? Wow, there's somebody in the car next to me using Waze! Damn, she's cute!
The more you interact with Waze, the more points you score and the higher you rank.
