Recently purchased a home inside the loop in Houston. Anybody out there have a form I could use to calculate/estimate what my property taxes will be? Purchase price $725,000, and it will be used as my primary residence. Specifically, does the $150,000 homestead exemption apply to all of the various property taxes that are assessed, such as City of Houston, Harris Co, Harris Co Dept of Edu, Harris Co Flood Control, Harris Co Hospital, Houston Comm. Coll, Houston ISD, and Port od Houston Auth?
Thanks in advance, and happy Thanksgiving!

Wow,
Not meaning to offend you but when I have 725k to spend on a primary residence, I sure as heck am going to have a real estate agent/broker who could answer all my questions especially something as simple as property tax/tax abatement on the property they just took a 22k or 58k paycheck home on! (depending agent or broker)
P.S. Harris county, well hold on to your pocket change... you'll need every penny! and Congratulations on your new home, I'm sure it's GORGEOUS.

What Kinds of Homestead Exemptions Are Available?
School taxes — all homeowners.
If you qualify for the homestead exemption, you will receive at least a $15,000 homestead exemption on the value of your home for school district taxes.

County taxes — all homeowners.
Harris County currently provides a 20% optional homestead exemption to all homeowners. This means, for example, that if your home is valued at $100,000, the exemption will reduce its taxable value for Harris County taxes by $20,000 to $80,000.

Optional exemptions — all homeowners.
Any taxing unit, including a school district, city, county or special district, may offer an exemption for up to 20% of your home's value. The amount of an optional exemption can't be less than $5,000, no matter what the percentage is. For example, if your home is valued at $20,000 and your city offers a 20% optional exemption, your exemption is $5,000, even though 20% of $20,000 is just $4,000.

The governing body of each taxing unit decides whether it will offer the exemption and at what percentage. This percentage exemption is added to any other homestead exemption for which the applicant qualifies.

I thought Texas had a fixed $10k progressive homestead exemption. This means it doesnt matter if your house costs $30k or $700k, you save $10k off the taxable value(at 3.3% tax, thats $333) If Houston really exempts $150k, most people pay $0 property taxes as theres thousands of houses costing under $150k. Even the nice ones can be had for $125k to $200k.

Before you buy a house you can also ask the owners what their taxes were the year before, same goes for utilities. You can also find out from the tax office the EXACT figure for YOUR property. Better than any kind of calculator out there since it is coming from the horses mouth.

Default Property Taxes

momof2dfw,

I know you don't like Zillow.com; however, I checked this morning and they have a feature that gives the sales history and tax info (in home detail page). I checked on mine and the 2006 property tax info was accurate. Can you check yours and see how accurate it is?
