Hi

Considering a move to Houston and we'd like to be in the Bellaire/Meyerland area because that is where the jewish community is centered. My job would have me working towards the Woodlands. While a synagouge is located in the woodlands, the jewish schools are not. I realize it will be a commute. One thing I've looked into is the housing in that area and it seems that affordable houses are those that are 30-40 years old. Newer homes tend to start at $1,000,000. Are there any neighborhoods or areas where one could find a new construction home starting for less than $1 million? Sugarland is too far and Katy is too far.

Holy heck, Bellaire/Meyerland to The Woodlands every day would absolutely suck. We live in northwest Houston near Jersey Village and are members of the ERJCC. It takes us 30-35 minutes to get there in traffic, so perhaps I would recommend Garden Oaks/Oak Forest. Is $1MM your upper limit?

Its also the Humble area. But yeah, not the best commute. But we want to be near the reform jewish school and the JCC.

You could buy a lot and build a new home for much less than a million, if you buy a less expensive home and demolish it. It's fairly common in the area.

Thanks. I guess we would need to look for a good property to do that if we went down that avenue. I guess there is potential for a lot of equity that option. Most of the older homes that I saw where single level ranch style homes.

Edit:

I guess lots can go for $400k alone. Then building on top of that ... Easy get up to a 7 digit home at that price

There are some lots further out from Meyerland that are much cheaper. Some of the flooded lots might be willing to negotiate too.

That sounds like an hour drive each way which is basically less time you get to spend with your kids. You could cut that drive in 1/2 by just moving to the north side of 610. Garden Oaks/Oak Forest or Northern heights area.

One home just sold in Westbury for $150,000. Cheap and you can build exactly what you want.
