My son is a recent college graduate. He accepted a position with Fluor Corporation in Sugar Land, TX. How do you like working at Fluor? What is the culture like? Are they supportive of college grads and new hires? How is the office? Thanks for your time and help.

They are well known for frequent layoffs. If he's being hired now its for a project but the second he's moved off that project or it ends typically they cut. Pay was at least a few years ago higher than competitors due to this

I remember reading this in the early 1970s. They hire in mass and lay off in mass -- but, while you're there, it's a good place to work.

I don't think they're much different than a Worley Parsons, Foster Wheeler, Technip, Bechtel, or Jacobs, etc with regards to layoffs. I had heard that Fluor was one of the better ones to work for, but am not sure if that's still the case.

One of my neighbors was with Fluor for almost sixteen years before his recent (well-timed) move to Hilcorp. It's not all short-timers.

There has been a shift in hiring at Fluor. There used to be a lot of 20+ year guys, but now they seem to be more content in the hiring/firing cycle based on work.

There are places that are even less stable, like Bechtel, though. Comp I've heard is good.

Fluor is a project based company but one of its strengths is that it has many projects in numerous industries. This provides continued employment and career development for many employees. There are ups and downs like every company but Fluor is dedicated to long term growth. It is the largest publically traded engineering / construction in the world and has been in business for over 100 years. Check out the facts and you will see why it is consistently voted as a great place to work.

Okay HR. I jest I jest but....

All the other projects based firms have a larger reputation for keeping people around in my experience. In my circle its almost a joke about layoffs at fluor. most employees there understand what they are getting into

Not that fluor is a bad place. Make the money while you are there, network and go elsewhere for a pay bump when a project is nearing completion. Workers now a days owe little loyalty to employers

Yes Fluor has a worse reputation on hire/fire than the others
