We would like to have 575 sq ft of porcelain tile installed in our house as part of a kitchen remodel. We have a quote from the General Contractor, and I believe his installation rate is high. What is a reasonable cost for installation not including removing the existing flooring? My step dad does flooring in another state and I spoke to him but certainly labor rates are different from place to place. I just want to get a sanity check on what the guy is trying to charge us. Thanks.

I think it's about $1.50 to $4 sf depending on complexity of the install. For basic install on good concrete surface without patterns or special cuts the cheapest would be $1.50 sf for labor only. A good installer generally charges $2-3 sf for labor.
