Whatever. I'm not going to keep fueling this fire. Maybe it will eventually sink in for you. Once it does, maybe you'll move on to a city that is heavily into idealism. Houston is 180 degrees opposite, and solidly into realism.

A city's identity/mentality is far more malleable than what you speak of with this analogy.

Houston has never, EVER been a "genteel" city.

Genteel (adj): polite, refined, or respectable, often I. An affected or ostentatious way
Synonyms: well mannered, courteous, polite, proper

Hey dawgg, this troll is getting old. I suggest starting over again, with yet another username.

Why don't you learn about the history of your own city, then you can get back to me. Just two sources to get you started:

Lets see if this works.

The only drawback about Houston is that its a dry, semi-arid, desert climate, with literally NO evergreens.

So, in other-words, no draw backs?

Other than its dry brown landscape, especially in the summer months...yeah, other than that, zero drawbacks.

Houston was a mosquito infested swamp founded by real estate developers.

Later there was Herman Park and the park at City Hall. Whatever amenities to be enjoyed by the public were given to the city by people getting rich here.

True, there were street cars and busses. The hep had to get to work.

By the 60s, park space was so spare, they counted the Astrodome parking lot as open space in order to meet federal guidelines.

If everyone in the Harris, Ft. Bend and Montgomery counties wanted to live in your genteel, walkable city, where would you put them?

I couldn't help but agree that the OP probably needs to consider finding a place to live that is more suited to his/her tastes, however questionable those may be.
