I live in west Oak Forest and am desperate to escape the Highway 290 corridor. The traffic gets worse by the week and the commute to downtown also gets longer all the time. I am moving to a closer-in home asap, regardless of the consequences. (Countrywide can go to H**L). For me, 30-40 minutes in traffic driving a mere 12 miles, twice a day, is a quality of life issue.

I'm outta here!

I agree with this fully. I spend 2.5-3 hours a day in traffic and it's killing me. I have 3 hours a day to enjoy myself, and that's enough time to cook dinner, eat, check the net, and watch an episode or two of tv, then sleep time; and do it all over again. Wake up at 6:45, leave at 7:30, get to work at 9 (or later), leave work at 5:30, get home at 7:00, and you know the rest.

Yes yes, this is why I happily escaped The Woodlands the instant I got my pass. Too damn long in a car.
I so love being home within 10 minutes, glass of wine in hand and a grill warming within 20 minutes of closing my laptop at work. It's the art of living.

Not to mention I now only put 7000 miles on my car a year instead of 16,000.

I do not understand why we haven't learned from past experiences with respect to highway construction and widening roads. They don't work, for long anyway. Why can't we work something out with the railroad and use the 290 railroad as a commuter railroad during the week? We could add a happy hour caboose on the end and it would bring in some extra revenue! What do you think? I'd ride it! Beats waiting on busses that are late because they're caught up the 290 traffic or standing up the whole way home on a bus. Crazy!

It would bring in extra revenue for Metro and the Harris County Sheriffs Office when they give out all those DUI's just right outside the Park & Ride stations. That's a win win for all!

Over the next 15 years - the highest growth in population in Houston is predicted to be out 290 in that direction (the most land available and yet to be developed) so get ready - it is going to get worse.

...and just how did some idiot give the OK to spend billions on I-10 to alleviate the traffic and not one thing has changed. It is still bumper to bumper to bumper.

Not only did they blow $10B on an expansion of I-10 that's accomplished little, they paved over an old railroad that could've been used for a commuter line to do it.

And some people go on about how rail is a waste of money.

Rail is the lifeline in many major cities. It is quick and convenient.
How about a monorail instead of that light rail to nowhere?
I can just bet Culberson gave his blessing to the I-10 mess since he stated (paraphrasing) whatever TXDOT. wants they get. Well they got a bundle for continuing ... well nothing basically. Just wait until this mess starts with HOV tolls and now riding 2 in a car will be a toll. 3+ is what it is going to take to avoid tolls.
