So my husband & I are planning a move to the Beaumont area (Orange, Lumberton, etc.) in January to be closer to his family (his closest brother lives in Mauriceville, I believe). Being as I have never been there, (born & raised on the Big Island of Hawai'i) I'm not quite ready to commit to just Beaumont alone without any insight. Ideally, the furthest from Beaumont I think we could do would be some 30 to 50 miles out. Just wondering anyone's opinions on the surrounding towns... (which towns are nicest, jobs, cost of living, crime rates, etc.) We have no children so I'm not so worried about schools or child related issues. I've heard all about Port Arthur so I know that's out. Any opinions on, basically anything, will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

**also, if anyone has any tips on finding a rental online that would be helpful. Would it be better to try a real estate company? It's hard to tell what's real online & what's not...

Hawaii to Beaumont, no kids, moving to be closer to his family? My option would be...

Divorce.

I have to agree, I hope there's a better reason to move than that. But that said, at the very least I'd demand to live in the city. My guess is you'd be a fish out of water anywhere else. So its 80 miles but really, how close do you need to be??

I'd go inner loop, exact area dependent on budget.

Check har.com for rentals.

DH grew up there. His family is still there.

Most folks get out as quickly as they can. The people who stay, love it. But they still come to Houston to shop.

I'm from Orange. I got out as fast as I could. When I got out, Orange was just lame. Now it is lame and dangerous. There was a huge demographic shift after the 2 hurricanes pounded the middle class out of that area. Now in all honesty, Mauriceville is a decent place to live -IF- you are ok with rural living. There are other decent towns in that area but in general - Orange, Beaumont, Port Arthur are not the best places to be.

The good news is that the cost of living will be incredibly cheap compared to Hawaii. Buying Food alone will save you a bundle.

What do you want to pay in rent? Do you want a house, apt., or town home? Where is the job location?

Any chance you could talk him into New Orleans?

Is that better than living in Houston?? No idea, never been to New Orleans, but what little I do know does not sound appealing!
