I live in the lower income section of Houston, the North side. There is a ditch in the apartment complex where I live and tenants dump trash and other wasted items in the ditch.

The problem is that kids (between the ages of 5 to 16) play everyday around this trash and liter and the apartment managment is just leaving there. I stop allowing my kids to go outside because I do not want to think that this is life and its outdoors is suppose to be this trashy. Plus, this is disgusting and bad for the enviorment and community.

I called the apartment complex many times to pick it up and they do nothing but let the grass grow over it to try and cover the trash. The liter in the complex is hugh and the apartment management is doing nothing to fix it. But, if you are late with the rent, they are zeal to get their money.

Yes, I agree its the tenants fault for putting that trash there but its the property managment responsibilty to take care of the property and so far the trash has been in the ditch for nearly 3 monhts. The management should exhaust all efforts to keep its property clean.

Who can call to correct this issue? Is there a Houston enviorment personnel to inform about this.

Please provide you help and advice.

Call 311 and they will route it to the appropriate agency. Direct number would be 713-640-4399 (City of Houston Environmental Section-Solid Waste). Make sure to get the report numbers and follow up on them. If it is a flood control ditch, you might also want to contact Harris County Flood Control (flood control ditches are their property mostly) not sure of their number though.

Call the Houston Apartment Association and advise them of this issue. They will call the property directly and have the issue resolved.

Is this one of those big complexes that have one dumpster for everyone?

The ditch runs through the complex, or is on the outer border? If the apartment owner doesn't own the land the ditch is on, it's not his problem. I hate to say it, but cleanliness, safety, care, community pride, etc aren't qualities you should remotely expect living in low income housing.
