Hello all:

Looking for help in selecting between Spring Branch vs Fort Bend ISD for two ASD kids. Daughter will be 4 in April and a son turned 6 few days ago. Son primarily non verbal. Daughter has some words but mostly repeats things she hears. Son has few/minor behavior issues. Daughter no behavior issues.

We have extended family living in Fort Bend ISD area already (in Rosenberg) hence considering Fort Bend ISD as an option since closeby family support is a big consideration.

Any info you can share that can help me compare these two dsitricts will be extremely helpful.

Thank you in advance!

Rosenberg is part of Lamar I SD, as are some parts of Sugar Land. the remainder of Sugar Land is Fort Bend ISD. Always check which school a specific house is zoned to, before making a decision.

In general, Special Education services in Texas are less than what most states provide.

I have had children in both FBISD and Lamar ISD, and Fort Bend is better for Special Ed. The big difference is in Shared Services that are not able to be provided by individual schools.

That said, The quality of FBISDs Special Ed Programs has decreased in the last few years, as they have been taking in a great many new kids to make up for their past failures to provide services to children in need (They were the worst in the state) The funding hasn't kept up, and spending per student has decreased. A good article about the issue:

FBISD Special Ed is still OK, but not as good as a few years ago.

Don't have any information on Spring Branch.

Consider Alief. It is not a district that comes to mind as top performing but when it comes to special education, Alief is highly regarded. It is located intermediate to the districts you mention.

I would call the district and ask which program your children may be put into, and which schools in that district offer that program. I know that in Lamar CISD, they have different levels of services for ASD but not all schools offer each program. This can be an issue if you are possibly going to have the two kids in different schools.
