Houston’s ‘Innovation Corridor’ Closer To Reality
Rice University announced start date for renovation of former Midtown Sears building.

FLORIAN MARTIN | POSTED ON JANUARY 30, 2019, 6:21 PM

The iconic former Sears building in the south of Midtown will soon be known as The Ion.

Rice University on Wednesday announced the renovation of the 270,000 square-foot building will start in May.

It’s meant to be the heart of Houston’s new innovation district and bring together startups, investors and academia.

Tech incubator Station Houston will oversee the programming at The Ion. The plan is to have entrepreneurial workshops, thought-leadership conferences, industry lectures, job training, educational classes and networking opportunities.

Also Wednesday, Boston-based accelerator MassChallenge announced the launch of a startup program at Greenstreet in downtown Houston.

It will be part of the approximately four-mile “innovation corridor” that will run along Main Street from downtown to the Medical Center.

That will be fantastic. I wonder how many other cities with a unique district like this.

It's not in this article, but Rice is also working to get other local universities involved, too. This is a win-win for everybody.

I know that Texas Southern will be a part of this.

University of Houston, Texas Southern University, University of St Thomas, University of Houston-Downtown, Houston Community College were planned to be involved along with Rice.

I would say Houston keeps on "reinventing itself."

This innovation center was in response to Houston's failed Amazon bid.

Nice to see the city respond in a positive way!

This is better than having a bunch of low-end warehouse jobs supplied by a company that doesn't care whether you drop dead at work, or how much public money they can fleece out of the greatest fools among civic leaders in America. Be glad Houston got this and not Amazon.

I imagine Midtown could transform into a dense residential district if this succeeds, I would love for the majority of the loop as well other areas of Houston to density rather than the city to sprawl past Brookshire (Which IMO Brookshire/Waller County should be the limit of sprawl West of Houston and Chambers the same in East Houston.

Why couldn’t they put this thing in a deserving suburb? There goes the neighborhood.
