From a geographic standpoint, the majority of Houston is split between the North & South sides. The East & West side aren't mentioned that much. Think about it, the majority of the city's population live on either side of town, even if they live in the suburbs. You can live in Sugar Land and you would be on the SW side, Tomball NW, and so on.

The west side is always going to be viewed more favorably. Living by the refineries and chemical factories isnt sought after.

West Houston is in a league of its own. E. Houston has real estate dispersed here and there, but due to the refineries and chemical factories, the toxic fumes over there can be deadly to residents.

But East Houston has all the character of the city... in fact it is where the city was founded... Harrisburg... the Port of Houston, The San Jacinto Monument, NASA, University of Houston, TSU...

the new Botanic Gardens will also be in East Houston.

I disagree with your premise that the city is defined as North/South... not true.
