Traditionally, the financial district was on the West Side of Downtown, anchored by the area right along the JP Morgan Chase Tower, Wells Fargo, TC Energy Building (formerly Bank of America Building).

But it appears the Galleria-area is taking over by storm. To be exact, it's a cross shaped area along Westheimer from the River Oaks to just outside of Uptown. And along Post Oak Blvd from Best Buy to Uptown Park.

Most of the Finance firms have been heading there or opening regional offices since of the late 2000s-early 2010s. But now you're even starting to see finance firms transfer from the traditional finance district to the Galleria area. https://www.bizjournals.com/houston/...wn-office.html

I don't expect all financial firms to depart from Downtown, my guess is that they will always be a significant force for office demand there. But the executives of these firms and their wealthiest clients mostly live in River Oaks, Tanglewood, and the Memorial Villages. Relocating close to their homes makes these firms come across as more "boutique" and catering to these clients.

I would've never guessed Houston had a financial district. To me, it's been underground, like you didn't know about it because it tended to blend in with the rest of DT Houston.

"Financial District" is definitely too strong a term for what Houston has. Financial firms are an important tenant segment in Downtown, Upper Kirby, and Uptown, and should remain so.

That term gets thrown out all over to places where you “wouldn’t expect”. But then again we over use these types of terms a lot lately.

Pardon my ignorance here, but I was under the impression that a lot of the financial firms were in the Greenway Plaza area. Am I wrong? Or did they used to be located there, but that's now changing? And if I am wrong, what types of businesses make up the bulk of tenants in Greenway Plaza now?

Just curious.

Yes, in my comment I meant Upper Kirby to include Greenway Plaza. There's long been a lot of financial firms there, as well as Downtown and Uptown.

That's right, I forgot that Upper Kirby was now what everyone seemed to call that entire area.

Upper Kirby and Greenway Plaza are officially the same thing as designated by the city. So you’re right.

Not to get too off topic, but the city now recognizes the area along Westheimer past Uptown but before entering West Chase as “Mid-west Houston”. Previously it was designated as “Briar meadow”. Does anyone ever hear the term “mid west” used?
