I'm no expert but after reading up a bit Richard felt numbness/blurred vision/motor control issues etc. during the 1980 All Star game. Next start he couldn't see signs from his catcher more numbness etc. The Astros put him on the 21 Day DL and sent him to the hospital. Apparently, docs found arterial problems but decided surgery wasn't required. After he came off DL before his first start he went to the chiropractor got an adjustment and before the start suffered his stroke.

I'm not really sure what The Astors should have done differently.

ETA - I did find a couple of press reports implying that Richard had poor rep. among teammates and claims he might have been overplaying his problems - but nothing impugning the Astros.

If anyone blew it that'd be the docs. Or more likely the chiropractor.
