Hello,

We are moving to Houston from Canada and would like some information with regards to elementary school in Houston, particulalry in the Sugarland area.
We've heard that in Texas, the cut off to enter Kindergarten is 5 years by september 1. Can anyone confirm this ? our son who is currently in Pre-Kindergarten in Canada, will be 5 in November.
Also, if this is the case, are there any public pre-kindergarten porgrams ? I can't seem to find any and have heard that the Pre-Kindergarten programs that exist in the public schools are for persons who do not speak english ?
Plaese advise. Thanks.

Regards,

Default Pre-Schools

Hi,
I stumbled upon your post when I was searching for something else.
I currently live in Spring, Texas (northern suburb of Houston) and am relocating to Cleveland OH, sometime this summer.
Just wanted to give you my 2 cents regarding pre-schools.
The way they do it on my side of town.. is enroll kids in local MDO's at churches. (Mother's Day Out Programs) that are a pre-cursor to Kindergarten. In the 4 year old programs...most MDO's work on letters, sounds, and beginning site words to prepare them for reading. Most of these preschools run around $300-400 per month's for 3 days per week~ from 9:00- 1:00 or 9:00-2:30.
They do have pre-k programs through the school district and the only way people qualify is if you need financial assistance or child is ESL. (English as a Second Language) and that pre-K is free.
The other thing that is "big" around these parts is bridging.. or "holding" kids back... (waiting to start kindergarten) especially for boys... ie.. if you started your 5 year old "on time" with a November Birthday... you will more than likely have a sprinkling of other boys in the same class with him that are 6 and 7 months older than him, nolonger making a November birthday seem "old" to start kindergarten.
I will ask around here in my playgroup to see if anyone knows any good / accredited pre-schools in Ft. Bend County/Sugarland area.
Enjoy Texas! I am going to miss it!

you may check with the School. I know many kids that qualify to skip KG. especially if he is already ahead for his age. Maybe you can sign a wavier. Please call the administration. Another option is the honor roll school which is private. It is about $1000 a month for pk-K. you can probably check their website...

Yes, your info about the age requirement is correct.

In case you don't already know about it, you can read parent reviews of schools at GreatSchools.net

We heard great things about The Walden School on Lexington in Sugar Land but it was full when we first moved here. Maybe they have openings coming up?
