We are looking at going to Houston for a two or three night stay and will be visiting the Museum of Natural Science and the zoo, so we would like to stay close to that area. It looks like the Hotel ZaZa is an easy walk to both and seems to have good reviews. Is there any reason not to stay there, or are there better options? It doesn't look like there are many places within walking distance, really, and although that is not a requirement it definitely makes life less complicated.

Thanks for any insight!

ZaZa is definitely the best place to stay if it’s within your budget. You can take the metro rail up to midtown and downtown for more dining options.

In addition, Rice Village and lower Westheimer near Montrose are both less than 2 miles away and have a ton of restaurant options. If you like walking, its a pleasant walk from Hotel ZaZa around the Rice University trail to the Rice Village. And its a short Uber ride.

It is the center of the Museum district with the Fine Arts Museum, Contemporary Arts Museum, Children's Museum and a number of others. So plenty of museums even if there aren't many restaurants.

Hermann Park is right off the Red Line. You can stay anywhere downtown that is walking distance from the rail stations. Check out The Marriott and The Hilton near Discovery Green.

I stayed at Hotel ZaZa before and loved the stay. Staying there is one of the best areas to stay in in the city. The museum district is one of my favorite areas in Houston.

I think you made a great choice! For others who might be looking at this thread in the future, do note that any of the downtown properties would make for a very easy rail trip to Museum District/Hermann Park if the price options or availability at ZaZa is an issue! (SanJac made this point also!)

Hotel ZaZa is a very nice luxury boutique hotel, so I’ve heard (never been). Yes, it’s walkable to all of the museums and zoo, but the zoo will be a bit of a longer trek. Also check out nearby McGovern Park and Japanese gardens if you walk through Hermann Park on your way to or from the zoo. Both are great spots for enjoying a picnic, maybe from a food truck if they’re around.

Not much selection for walkable restaurants, nightlife or shopping, so you’ll want to drive/Uber for those. There are some, but it’s a fairly quiet scene for entertainment after dark.

As always, be aware of your surroundings and take the usual precautions you would in any large city, especially at night and especially now.

Weather is forecasted to be gorgeous through the weekend, if you’re visiting then.

Just saw your arrival date. November should be a great time to visit and walk the area. (Still pretty hot and humid even today.)
