Will be possibly moving to this area next year, please advise on good public schools(K-4), as well as neighborhoods with in 20 min. commute from Gulfgate Center Mall (77087). Which side or area of the city is most commonly sought after as the nicest to live?

Nicest part of Houston proper would easily be River Oaks. Runners up are Rice village & Clear Lake. I'm sure these aren't the only places in Houston proper with $1M+ homes. West side villages, Bellaire & West University Place are separate cities surrounded by Houston on all sides, also up there.

Night & day compared to Gulfgate.

There are nice areas in pretty much every part of town. There are bad areas in pretty much every part of town. Now, with that said, you can get a map and draw a circle around a 20 minute radius around Gulfgate and begin your search. I believe this would put you no farther south than the tollway, no farther north than Allen Parkway/Memorial, no farther west than 59 at Kirby, and not too sure on east as I don't know that area well enough to know the traffic patterns. Just know that if you are looking suburban, you will fight traffic getting to Gulfgate, but if you look urban, you will reverse commute.

Your price limit is going to be more of a factor than anything else here.

Considering your given radius I would say River Oaks if you can afford. More moderate income I'd say Clear Lake.
Tstone what is that really nice community, Bay Oaks?

Yep - Bay Oaks is the nicest. Here's one listing outta there:

14317 Golf View Trail, Houston, TX 77059

Has the golf course, country club, etc. Bay Forest is a close second:

15711 Sylvan Lake Dr, Houston, TX 77062

I'd go with River Oaks, some of the neighborhoods near the Museum District, and the Memorial Villages, all for their quiet, trees, and topography.

When we visited River Oaks for the first time, we thought, "No wonder the people living here think the 'burbs are the pits." River Oaks is one of the wealthiest areas in America and it shows very well.

Chiming in and saying River Oaks, if we're talking about "nicest." River Oaks is not in my personal style (because it's basically all houses; not too much going on) but I must admit a ride down River Oaks Blvd, is highly impressive.
