well you are already starting at a deficit because you're going in thinking they wont find you attractive. instead of going after what you consider are 8s and 9s, maybe go after who you feel are 5s and 6s to gain some confidence.
look up current fashion trends. make sure you are gaining muscle mass. and most importantly have your life together. all those things will give you confidence, which is the most attractive thing to girls above all else (height, money, status).
