If you’re used to “beach cottage” towns in other parts of the US, prepare to be unimpressed with Texas. Especially Michigan. Most people down here don’t know a single thing about the Great Lakes. Don’t get me wrong, the suggestions here certainly have their charm— let’s just say please keep an open mind.

Right. Technically Michigan has a lake "beach." As others have mentioned and as we can see in the news today, the gulf coast can't retain rustic charm while being pummeled by hurricanes every 20 years!

It's why I was suggesting a small town inland with lake access might be a better option.

No small older towns because there was a time when one had to pay cash for a beach house. No mortgages or insurance. There were some communities on Bolivar. Everyone knew each other because the only phone in town was at the community store.

My mom lived on Bolivar. Even after Carla took her new house, lot and all.

Carla and FEMA had a big influence on the development of the upper Texas coast.

Add south Padre island to the list… but that is even further from Houston.

What about rockport?

Jimmy Buffet is putting in a Margaritaville at Chrystal Beach.

That'll be a village.

Well, if you're looking for low-rise and non-touristy, South Padre definitely ain't it. Though most consider it to have the best beaches.

While Rockport is definitely coastal, I don't know that it has a beach, as it's a bay community.

Rockport has a beach, but it's on the bay. Same sort of thing at Goose Island State Park, up the road from Rockport and Fulton. If bayside beaches are acceptable, then Port O'Connor is an option as well.
