....looking at hotels and AirBNBs. Is this a reasonably safe area? Basically looking at all things west of 288, bordered north by the Museum District, and Rice to the west. South appears to be the medical district.

Might try out the Original Ninfa's too. Is that alright to drive for unfamiliar people, or is Uber recommended?

The area around Hermann Park is generally pretty safe. If you were a bit more specific, we’d be able to help out more but overall safe area there

Driving to original Nina's is fine. They have a large parking lot but know that it gets very busy at peak times.

Lots of great hotels in the med center, plus easy dining options and right on the rail so I wouldn't leave that area out. Hotel ZaZa on the north side is iconic and probably, IMO, the best located hotel in the city, if you can afford it. Houston has pretty good parking in general, but in that area right around Hermann Park it can get a little dicey at times. Houston is a perfect city for uber.

Definitely stay at the Hotel ZaZa, if you can.

From there, you can get to most places by train + walking.

You can take the train to downtown. Walk to the Museum District, Rice U, Hermann Park, and the Rice Village.
