Is Mattress Mack free furniture if Astros win it all gambling?

Mattress Mack makes supersized Astros promo

For the latest sports-based venture, called the “2022 Astros Win It All, Get It All” promotion, customers who spend $3,000 or more on Made in America furniture, a Tempur-Pedic, Stearns & Foster or Sealy mattress sleep set or power motion furniture stand to double their purchase if the Houston Astros capture the 2022 World Series. For instance, a customer who spends $5,000 on qualifying product would receive $10,000 back.

“Obviously, business ain’t where it was last year, so you’ve got to do something to get people moving,” he said. “We thought this would get people moving because the Astros have a very good team with a good chance to get back to the World Series. Giving people a chance to get 200% of their money back seems to create some excitement, so we’ll roll with it as long as we can.”

To offset any potential paybacks, McIngvale has placed his own big bets on the Astros. According to reports from the Houston Chronicle, McIngvale placed two big bets on May 13, totaling $4 million. The report notes that should the Astros prevail, Mattress Mack would bring home $42 million.

I don't consider it gambling since you're buying a product and you keep that product even if the Astros lose. I have no idea if it fits the legal definition of gambling though.

I also don't understand sports betting. How can you put $4 million on the team favored to win and bring home $42 million?

Mac gave me a free living room set when the Seahawks beat the Broncos for his first promo. About $8k worth of furniture for free - I had to pay taxes on it. Now I’m a customer for life.

He made the bet in may. Even if the astros had the highest odds back then to win (which I don’t think is true) there was still a lot of baseball to be played at that point. If you made the same bet now it wouldn’t be anywhere near $42 million as there are now only two teams left.

The bet he placed was 5 months ago.

Ahh that makes sense now. The odds back then must have been a lot different. This is why I don't gamble.

The bet was made on May 4 and the Astros were not the favorites. On that date, they were 1.5 games behind the Angels in their division, ten other teams had better records, and the two top teams were the Dodgers and the Yankees. Lance McCullers was still rehabbing from his surgery and there were doubts if Verlander could hold up for a season after his surgery.
