We have an awful problem with trashy properties in Austin where there are no HOAs. I'm assuming it's the same in just about every city. The HOAs here are limited to suburbs, and you can definitely tell which ones. Many people love living in the city proper because of the convenience, but even in neighborhoods where many properties sell for over $1M, you can end up next to a pig sty. On my street, we had a property that was abandoned for 15 years. It was finally bought and the place torn down. There will eventually be a nice home to replace the old one. Across the way from that property is a house where the family has junk cars, dead trees, a garage stacked to the ceiling with junk, etc. But next door to that one is a gorgeous property. So it's a mixed bag. But I'm tired of it. I can handle the HOA. If I can't do the yard work myself, or have to leave for a couple of weeks, I'll simply hire someone to do it.
